The island is a refuge for nature lovers, with incredible opportunities to explore untouched wilderness, observe diverse wildlife, and enjoy breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean. Walking through its paths or along its beach, you’ll find peace and tranquility surrounded by the sound of waves and the songs of birds.

Emergency Services
In an emergency, call 911 first, and be prepared with a Dewees Island address and describe your exact location.
After calling 911, your call will be routed to our island’s Public Safety Department, which can also be reached at 843-296-4952. We have a fire station on the island, a first responder on duty at all times, a helicopter landing field, and an emergency boat for transportation in weather-permissible conditions.
Travel & Logistics
Getting to Dewees Island requires planning. A private ferry from the Isle of Palms marina is the only access, so check the schedule. Once there, you’ll need a golf cart, bike, or walk to get around; please follow safety guidelines and speed limits.
With no stores or restaurants, bring all necessary supplies, including food and essentials. The island has a strict no single-use plastic policy—avoid disposable bottles, bags, and utensils to help protect the ecosystem.
Unpredictable Weather
Dewees Island's weather can be highly variable. In the summer, sudden thunderstorms are common, while hurricane season may bring more severe conditions. We recommend checking the local weather forecast frequently before and during your visit so you can be prepared. Visitors may be asked to evacuate in the case of a hurricane or potential flooding.Â
Wildlife Awareness
The island is a haven for a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, venomous snakes, coyotes, and bobcats. While these animals are an integral part of the ecosystem, it’s important to admire them from a safe distance. Refrain from approaching or feeding any wildlife. Be cautious of your surroundings when exploring the island, particularly in wooded or marshy areas.
The island’s natural beauty attracts an abundance of insects, so be sure to bring and use bug repellent, especially in the warmer months.
Swimming
Though Dewees offers breathtaking beaches, swimming comes with natural risks. The tides can be swift, and sharp shells, barnacles, oysters, and underwater hazards are common. Please be cautious when swimming or walking near the shore.
Enjoying Your Stay
While Dewees Island’s isolation may sometimes feel challenging, it also makes this place so special. The natural beauty, quiet surroundings, and close-knit community make it a wonderful place to relax and reconnect with nature. Prepare carefully and respect the island’s environmental guidelines, and you’ll have an unforgettable experience surrounded by the raw beauty of Dewees Island.
